How do temperature and humidity affect the ESD bag?
February Fri , 2025

In the fields of electronic manufacturing, medical equipment, precision instruments, etc., static electricity is an invisible "killer" - light will cause damage to components, heavy will cause fire or even explosion. As the "guardian" of these sensitive products, anti-static bags bear the heavy responsibility of resisting ESD. However, the performance of this "guardian" is not absolutely stable, and it will be affected by environmental temperature and humidity. Today, we will explore how temperature and humidity affect the performance of anti-static bags.

First, the temperature factor

Antistatic bags are usually made of multi-layer composite materials (such as PE, PET or metallized films), and temperature directly affects the physical and chemical properties of the material:

1. High temperature

· Material softening and deformation: High temperature will cause the activity of plastic molecular chain to intensify, the bag body may become soft, sticky, or even irreversible deformation, reducing the sealing and puncture resistance.

· Decrease of electrostatic dissipation performance: the stability of some anti-static coatings will be weakened at high temperatures, resulting in a greatly reduced electrostatic shielding effect.

The high temperature resistance range of an ESD bag varies with the type and quality of the material. In general, anti-static bags made of polyethylene can withstand temperatures below 60 ° C, while anti-static bags made of polyimide materials can withstand higher temperatures, ranging up to 200 ° C or more. If the temperature exceeds the temperature limit of the material, the above performance changes may be caused.

2. Low temperature

· embrittlement cracking: Low temperature will make the material brittle, easy to break during handling or transportation, and lose its protective effect.

· Coating shedding: The adhesion of the metallized coating may be reduced due to low temperature shrinkage, resulting in local peeling.

Although the impact of low temperature on the ESD bag is relatively small, in extreme low temperature conditions (such as below -40 ° C), you still need to pay attention to the performance changes of the bag to ensure that it can normally play a protective role.

3. Temperature recommendation

To ensure the best performance of the ESD bag, ensure that the ambient temperature for storing and using the ESD bag ranges from 0 ° C to 40 ° C. Keep the ESD bag away from direct sunlight or heat sources, such as the heating system and the heat dissipation port of the device. If you need to use at extreme temperatures, it is recommended to communicate with the supplier in advance to customize the temperature resistant product.

Second, humidity factor

Humidity is crucial to the generation and dissipation of static electricity, and too high or too low humidity will affect the performance of the anti-static bag:

1. Low humidity

·Increased accumulation of static electricity: In a dry environment, the surface resistance of the material increases, and static electricity is easier to generate and difficult to derive. At this time, the electrostatic dissipation efficiency of the anti-static bag may not be enough to offset the cumulative risk of external static electricity.

·Dust adsorption problem: electrostatic adsorbed dust will pollute the products in the bag, especially in the clean workshop need special attention.

2. High humidity

· Material hygroscopic expansion: Some antistatic layers (such as hydrophilic coatings) may expand due to hygroscopic expansion, resulting in decreased shielding performance.

· Metal layer oxidation: the metalized film is easy to oxidize and rust in a humid environment, shortening the service life.

3, humidity recommendations

To ensure the best performance of the ESD bag, ensure that the ambient humidity is 30% to 70% RH. This can be achieved by:

· Use humidifiers or place humidity regulators in dry areas;

· Equipped with dehumidifier or desiccant pack in wet areas;

· Regularly monitor the humidity in the warehouse to avoid sharp fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

Anti-static bag is not a "once and for all" solution, only with reasonable temperature and humidity management, can maximize its protection value. As a source factory focusing on the field of anti-static packaging for more than 20 years, STAR has always upheld rigorous testing standards to ensure product performance, and is committed to providing customers with customized packaging solutions.
